Professional Progression… Meet Finlay Wilkinson!

October 30, 2024

In our ongoing Professional Progression series, we are excited to share Finlay’s journey with Professional Security.

  • How did you get into working for a security company? What made you want to work at Professional Security?

Honestly, I kind of stumbled into the security industry. It all started when a recruitment company contacted me about a temporary position with Professional Security for a major Project. They told me it was a fun, supportive work environment and that it would be a great company to join. That was enough to spark my interest. My first day was fantastic – the team was incredibly welcoming and supportive, and I knew I’d found a place where I could really see myself being able to grow.

  • Give an overview of your role at Professional. What do you do on a daily basis?

My official title is Front Desk Receptionist, but I wear quite a few hats in the company! My responsibilities are diverse, so I end up doing a bit of everything. I handle the tech orders – radios, body cams, and so on – for the Operations team, and I also work on compliance by organising site files and handling client testimonials. Aside from that, I’m the go-to person for maintenance in the office. If anything needs fixing or if there are any health and safety updates, I make sure they’re taken care of. I also help with travel bookings for the team and work with finance to manage expenses on the company credit card.

  • Were you aware of the career opportunities available in the industry when you first started?

When I first started, I didn’t fully realize how many paths there are in security, especially within Professional Security. Our company is very open about progression, which I think is fantastic. The company supports growth across the board, whether it’s within the office or out in the field. It’s great to know that there’s always room to develop.

  • What’s the most enjoyable aspect of your role at Professional?

Seeing the company grow and being part of that journey has been incredibly fulfilling. A couple of years ago, we held a company conference, and it was amazing to see the progress we’ve made, from new initiatives to our efforts in giving back. Our social values and charity work really highlight the strong sense of community we have here. Being part of a close-knit team that’s making a difference is something to proud of.

  • What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

The best advice I’ve received is to “stand out from the crowd.” This stuck with me because when I was approached about my current role at reception, it was because someone noticed my bubbliness and welcoming smile and thought I’d be a great fit for the front desk. That advice helped me see the value in showing up as my true self and letting my personality shine, which has opened doors I hadn’t even considered.

  • What’s one piece of advice you would give someone who is currently working on the frontline and is wanting to progress?

If you’re interested in moving up, put yourself out there and make connections. We have platforms like LinkedIn for a reason, so use them! I’ve found that being proactive really makes a difference. If you’re eyeing a role, get in touch with the people who can help you get there. For example, if you’re a door supervisor interested in becoming an area manager, reach out to the Ops team. There’s so much potential for growth here, but you must take that first step.

  • Tell me one surprising fact about you.

Something most people wouldn’t guess: I grew up on a farm and still live on one! You might not expect it, given my corporate role and love for long nails, but I’m very much an outdoors person. I love camping, and nothing makes me happier than waking up to a field full of Highland cattle.

Working with Professional Security has been a journey of growth, support, and opportunity. I’m grateful to be part of a team that encourages everyone to progress and make a difference, and I’m excited to see what’s next.
