January 2025 – Taking the Leap

I began my apprenticeship in January 2025 after several weeks of carefully weighing up whether to take on the challenge. Having turned 50 the previous year, it had been 33 years since I completed my A-Levels, which made the thought of returning to education feel daunting. I was concerned that I might be too old to start learning again and felt nervous about balancing studying alongside a busy work schedule.

n the first few months, I had to adapt to studying again while managing my professional responsibilities. Despite my 24 years of experience in the security sector and my confidence in my industry knowledge, I quickly realised that my understanding of core business fundamentals was limited. This realisation initially felt overwhelming but also motivated me to fully engage with the learning process.

Midway Point – Building Knowledge and Skills

As the apprenticeship progressed, I completed modules covering key areas including people and performance management, finance and resource management, leadership and ethical practice, and strategic alignment and sustainability. Learning various business models and management tools significantly expanded my knowledge and skill set, allowing me to grow both professionally and personally.

Now, 12 months into the apprenticeship, it has become one of the best decisions I have ever made. The learning has enhanced my ability to lead effectively and strengthened my confidence when working with stakeholders and senior leadership teams. For the first time in my career, I no longer feel out of my depth. Instead, I feel like I truly belong within the wider business environment.

Looking Ahead – Continuing the Learning

With six months remaining on my current apprenticeship, I have already committed to starting another Level 5 qualification, this time in coaching. I have rediscovered my passion for learning, and it is positively influencing every aspect of my life, particularly my career development.

From someone who once had significant doubts about returning to education, I can confidently say this apprenticeship has had a profoundly positive impact on my life. For anyone considering starting an apprenticeship at any stage of their career, my advice is simple: fully commit, embrace the learning process, and do not let age or self-doubt hold you back. It could change your life too.
