Professional Progression… Meet Michelle Booth!

November 13, 2024

In the next edition of our “Professional Progression” series, we are excited to share Michelle’s journey at professional.

  • How did you get into working for a security company? What made you want to work at Professional?

I used to work on cruise ships and returned home in November 2019 with no clue what I wanted to do next. After some time, I ended up working at a different security company for six months. While there, I had to conduct actual security shifts at McArthur Glen in York. That experience quickly made me realize that I was more suited for an office-based role rather than being out on the frontline. Ever since I started in security, I’ve found a niche that I truly enjoy.

  • Give an overview of your role at Professional. What do you do daily?

As a Head of Operational Support, my main responsibility is to ensure that everything runs smoothly with operations. I manage the Security Operations Centre (SOC), making sure that the guarding staff are efficient, properly briefed, and in uniform. I also log new sites and manage deployments to ensure that all shifts are staffed, while assisting with hospitality needs as required. I like to call the SOC “Solutions” because that’s exactly what we do — we find solutions to everyone’s problems!

  • Were you aware of the career opportunities available in the industry when you first started?

Not really. When I first joined the industry, I came in as a team leader due to my prior experience. Since I was one of the first in the SOC department, I had a slightly higher position than some of my colleagues. But looking back now, after nearly four years, I see that there are so many opportunities for growth within this industry. It’s amazing to see how people around me have progressed quickly and how the company truly values unique skills and interests.

  • What’s the most enjoyable aspect of your role at Professional?

The people I work with are the highlight of my job. The security industry has introduced me to a diverse range of individuals, and I’ve made friendships that I likely wouldn’t have encountered otherwise. We have nationwide Area Managers, and when we all meet up, it feels like we’re part of a big family.

  • What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

The best advice I’ve received is that if I want something, I must work hard for it—nobody is going to hand it to me. I’ve always believed in fighting for what I want. You have to show your willingness to go above and beyond because that’s what sets you apart in this industry.

  • What’s one piece of advice you would give someone who is currently working on the frontline and is wanting to progress?

I would tell them to give it everything they have got, outshine the competition, and go above and beyond in everything they do. Being willing to help others and showing initiative will definitely make you stand out.

  • Tell me one surprising fact about you.

A surprising fact about me is that my mother is from Cyprus, making me half Greek. During my time working on cruise ships, I travelled the world and worked in the shops on board, which allowed me to explore new places while getting paid. One of the most intriguing experiences I had was when I lived the same day twice while traveling due to the time difference between Australia and Canada—it’s a memory I cherish!
