Your safety matters

When managing crowd safety at an event, from club nights and festive parties to stadium fixtures and large-scale New Year’s Eve events, one of the most important parts of a secure entry process is the pat-down search.

When carried out correctly, pat-downs help protect everyone involved, including guests, staff and the venue itself. At Professional Security, our priority is to deliver these checks professionally, efficiently and respectfully, so people feel safe and reassured from the moment they arrive.

Why are pat-down searches necessary?

Pat-down searches are a key part of event safety planning and are widely used across the UK at licensed venues, live events and major public gatherings.

They help to:

Prohibited items

Prevent weapons, drugs or other prohibited items from entering the venue

Bag checks

Support bag checks and other screening measures

Unsafe Behaviour

Deter unsafe or non-compliant behaviour

Reassure Safety

Reassure attendees that safety is taken seriously

Licensing requirements

Meet venue, licensing and insurance requirements

Large crowds, heightened excitement and alcohol can increase risk, particularly during busy periods such as Christmas and New Year. Pat-downs help security teams identify and reduce potential issues before they escalate.

At outdoor or high-volume events where metal detectors are not always practical, a clear and consistent pat-down process is often the most effective way to maintain safety at entry points.

Extra care during Christmas and New Year events

The festive period brings unique challenges for event safety.

Christmas parties, end-of-year celebrations and New Year’s Eve events often attract larger crowds, busier venues and longer operating hours. Alcohol consumption is typically higher, and venues are under increased pressure to manage queues, entry flow and capacity safely.

At this time of year, visible security measures such as pat-downs and bag checks play an important role in maintaining a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone attending. They also help venues stay compliant with licensing conditions during peak trading periods.

Preparing for a safe and smooth entry process

A successful pat-down process starts well before the first guest arrives. At Professional Security, we ensure search areas are clearly set out, well staffed and easy to understand.

Key steps include:

  • Informing guests in advance through signage or event communications
  • Creating clearly defined entry lanes to reduce congestion
  • Ensuring male and female staff are available to conduct searches
  • Briefing staff on tone, consistency and procedure before doors open
  • Keeping search areas well lit, visible and respectful

Clear communication and good planning help reduce frustration and keep queues moving smoothly.

How pat-downs are carried out

Our teams follow a consistent, professional approach. Generally the following applies. Of course, every venue and circumstance is different and requires colleagues to act on initiative and on the basis of training provided:

  • Greet and explain
Guests are greeted politely and told why the search is taking place. Importantly consent is required and requested for the search. A brief explanation helps put people at ease and encourages cooperation.
  • Visual check
Staff carry out a visual assessment for bulky clothing or concealed items before making contact.
  • Emptying pockets
Guests are asked to remove items from their pockets and place them in a tray or on a table.
  • Conducting the pat-down
Searches are carried out using a top-to-bottom method. Staff explain what they are doing, avoid sensitive areas unless necessary, and maintain clear communication throughout.
  • Managing prohibited items
Any prohibited items are handled in line with venue procedures. Items are recorded, secured and escalated to supervisors or police where required.
  • Closing the interaction
A polite closing, such as thanking the guest for their cooperation, helps leave a positive first impression.

We actively plan to avoid problems such as:

Communication

Guest discomfort, by communicating clearly and acting professionally

Logging procedures

Poor handling of confiscated items, by following strict logging procedures

Why professional standards matter

At Professional Security, we believe good security should feel calm, fair and well managed.

Our staff are trained not only in pat-down techniques, but also in customer service, conflict management, safeguarding and equality awareness. This ensures every search is conducted respectfully, while maintaining the high safety standards expected by venues, event organisers and the public.

Your safety matters

A pat-down search is not just a security check. It is part of the overall event experience.

When carried out properly, it sends a clear message to everyone attending: Your safety matters here.

Whether we are supporting a venue hosting a festive event for 200 people, a New Year’s Eve celebration, or a major stadium event with 150,000 spectators, our teams are committed to keeping people safe while ensuring they feel welcome, respected and confident in the security around them
