At Professional Security, we’re proud to highlight the people shaping our business every day. This week, we’re shining a spotlight on Nick Gilling, whose journey from hospitality into security shows just how diverse and rewarding a career in the industry can be.

From Hospitality to Security

Before joining the security industry, Nick spent a decade working across the UK hospitality sector, building experience with some of the country’s most recognised brands.

From entry-level roles through to senior management, he developed a strong foundation in operations, customer service, and leadership – skills that would later prove invaluable in his security career.

Three years ago, Nick made the decision to step into something new, joining Professional Security as a Door Supervisor. Within just a year, he expanded his role, taking on responsibilities as a Business Development Manager alongside his frontline work.

A Dual Role with Real Impact

Nick’s role is unique, combining frontline experience with business development.

As a BDM, he works closely with operators across the UK – identifying businesses that may be new to security, dissatisfied with their current providers, or at risk due to non-compliant or illegitimate services.

His focus is simple: offer a better solution.

Whether that’s providing a more supportive service, improving standards, or ensuring compliance, Nick plays a key role in helping clients feel confident in their security provision.

Alongside this, he remains actively involved on the frontline, regularly deploying with teams to maintain a close connection with the service he represents.

Changing Perceptions

Like many, Nick admits his early perception of the security industry wasn’t entirely accurate.

He once believed the role was limited to a certain type of person – but his experience quickly proved otherwise.

Now, he sees security as a sector full of opportunity, with multiple career pathways beyond the door.

His journey into a hybrid operational and business role highlights just how much the industry can offer to those willing to take the leap.

Making a Difference

For Nick, the most rewarding part of the role is the ability to positively impact others.

That could mean helping someone safely get home at the end of a night out, providing first aid in an emergency, or supporting a business in finding the right security solution.

He’s equally passionate about the people he works alongside, valuing the time he spends with frontline teams.

“None of us can do what we do without them.”

Advice for Those Starting Out

Nick’s advice for anyone looking to build a career in security is straightforward:

  • Take the leap
  • Say yes to opportunities
  • Get hands-on experience across all areas of the sector.

He emphasises the importance of building a strong reputation, as the industry often relies on word of mouth and recommendations.

The more experience you gain, the better positioned you are to shape a career that aligns with your passions.

Overcoming Challenges

One of Nick’s biggest challenges was stepping away from a stable hospitality career to pursue something new.

Since then, his focus has shifted to growing the Business Development Manager role within Professional Security – something he’s incredibly proud to have helped shape.

Like many in the industry, Nick also recognises the challenges faced on the frontline, including dealing with difficult situations and the pressures that can come with the role.

To support his own wellbeing, he has worked closely with Andy’s Man Club and is passionate about continuing this support through initiatives like No Guard Alone, ensuring no officer feels unsupported.

Beyond the Role

Outside of work, Nick is involved in a volunteering partnership programme in South Africa, supporting wildlife conservation and community outreach projects.

This opportunity allows him to travel, work alongside teams on the ground, and contribute to meaningful initiatives beyond the security industry – something that reflects his passion for making a positive difference wherever he can.

More Than Just a Job

Nick’s journey is a great example of how taking a chance can open doors to new opportunities.

From hospitality to security, from the frontline to business development, his progression shows that the industry is full of potential for those willing to embrace it.
