Security Career Progression Story: Alex’s Journey at Professional Security

In the next edition of our Professional Progression series, we’re proud to share Alex’s security career progression story — a journey of ambition, rapid growth, and leadership within Professional Security.

Alex’s career shows how transferable skills, dedication, and the right mindset can unlock incredible opportunities in the security industry.

How Alex Got Into the Security Industry

I’ve always believed that every experience teaches a valuable lesson, and my career reflects that belief.

My journey began in 2016 while working at McDonald’s during college, where I progressed into a management role. I later joined HMPPS as a prison officer, but the limited work-life balance and career growth encouraged me to look for a new direction.

In November 2023, my fiancé, Kevin Flynn — an Area Manager at Professional Security — suggested I apply. I joined as a door supervisor and drew on my customer service and leadership background. After receiving strong feedback from venue managers, I was promoted to Team Leader at Boxpark. By November 2024, I stepped into my current role as Northwest Area Manager, a position I’m truly passionate about.

Alex’s Role at Professional Security

As an Area Manager, I oversee venues across the M6 route to ensure operations run smoothly and consistently.

My daily responsibilities include:

  • Managing venue performance and compliance

  • Interviewing and onboarding new staff

  • Meeting with clients and maintaining relationships

  • Conducting door supervisor audits

  • Supporting and developing frontline teams

The variety keeps the role exciting, and I enjoy engaging with both staff and clients every day.

Why Alex Chose Professional Security

I joined Professional Security because of its professionalism, reputation, and clear opportunities for career growth.

My experience in hospitality and uniformed services prepared me well for the role. The company has supported my development and provided genuine opportunities to progress — something I’m incredibly grateful for.

Awareness of Career Opportunities in Security

When I first started, I knew progression was possible — seeing Kevin’s rapid rise to Area Manager made that clear.

However, I never expected to progress so quickly myself. Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and excited about what’s ahead.

What Alex Enjoys Most About the Role

What I love most is the variety — no two days are ever the same.

I’m constantly learning new skills, tackling fresh challenges, and building strong relationships with clients and staff. I also still enjoy working on venues when possible, as I genuinely love being on the frontline and interacting with members of the public.

Best Career Advice Alex Has Received

The best career advice I’ve ever been given came from my McDonald’s manager, Laura:

“Set a target, focus on it, and don’t give up. Always strive to be a better version of yourself.”

That mindset has guided me throughout my career. I always encourage others to learn from peers, ask questions, and give their best in everything they do.

Advice for Frontline Staff Wanting to Progress

I have two key pieces of advice:

Learn from others. When I wanted to progress from door supervision, I looked up to Kevin Flynn and actively asked questions to build my knowledge.

Be proactive. Show ambition, seek responsibility, and make it clear that you want to grow within the company.

Progress comes faster when you’re willing to learn and step outside your comfort zone.

A Surprising Fact About Alex

Here’s a fun fact — I used to be a baby model for Tesco and Matalan! A surprising start for someone now building a successful career in security.
